Purposefully Lost: Are the kids alright in Discovery Bay?
Moments of the Week (aug 30- sep 5)
Dental appointments for all three… Nothing major, however, we were warned that Lea may need orthodontics in a few years.
Dropped into Decathlon, Mong Kok - had a water sports shopping spree. Lea and Feris got matching suits. Feris feels liberated with a kickboard.
Pet window shopping for thousand-dollar boutique dogs and exotic fish. It doesn't hurt to look.
We became a tad more sedentary with a TV that I bought for 300 HKD. I rode with it on the bus from one end of DB to the other.
The virtual back-to-school night was uneventful.
Jero’s weekend highs and lows are correlated with BOTW playing time.
Feris and Maricar got attacked by sandflies and are catching up to Lea and me. I think Jero has an invisible bug forcefield.
thinking out loud...
We've been in school for 2.5 weeks. Are the kids okay?
It depends on whom you ask. Feris seems to be her usual positive self with a story to tell and insights on a new person each day. Lea tends to do her own thing but has been dramatic about the humidity. Jero is putting past friendships on a pedestal and is doubtful he will find something similar.
Over the next few weeks, I'll see what I can do to help each of them find their school community.
On the academic front, school seems to be easy and the days are starting to flow. In this bubble, it's safe and easy to navigate. I wish they would do more exploring on their own.
on the move...
46.47 miles, 4,662 ft (Elevation)
Made a friend. We went for a run and exchanged stories.
Keeping my shoes dry is an ongoing battle. The combination of stuffed newspapers and setting the shoes out in the sun seems to partially work. I’ll try ankle sweatbands on Monday.
There was one good day where the humidity dropped in the morning. It felt good. Can't wait for the fall!
I started following a number of local Discovery Bay runners via Strava - trying to get a sense of the best segment combinations and where people go when they hit the trails. A few observations:
People are running all the same segments but run them in different directions and loop them creatively.
I’m suffering before the sun comes out. How is it that people are running in the afternoon?
Trail runners love their elevation and they go long. 6,000+ feet and runs that last half a day. Wow.
I went on another trail run and I did plenty of walking. Fortunately, the “jungle” protected me from the sun, provided a cool breeze and was filled with the faint smell of something Sampaguita like.
Put my name and Maricar’s in for the HK Marathon Lottery. We find out next week. I’d be relieved either way.
